Learning Surf Photography Instagram Wave Of The Week 2

This image is the most popular on my Instagram page from the 4th of August to the 10th, I’m a bit behind, but that at least gives all the images equal chance of getting likes.

It’s a different angle of a line-up to normal, it was a cloudy day so I converted it to Black and white, I like the texture that the offshore breeze is giving to the water and the perspective lends itself to mind surfing I think, you can imagine racing that next section to get out onto the face for a turn for instance.

Although the original photo was shot in landscape orientation I actually like it in portrait because of the vertical swell line, the vast majority of surf photo’s feature horizontal lines, so by simply shooting from the side, and in this case above, you can create something a little bit different, that’s why I think it stood out amongst the other shots in the Instagram feed that week.

I actually use this image as a background on my Nexus 7 tablet, it works quite well with the parallax scrolling effect and the black and white helps the icons for the apps stand out. ISO 125, 200mm, f4 1/1000
