Christmas Sessions – On Housing Flash Preview

I hope everyone reading this got what they wanted for Christmas, I had a few uncrowded surfs in between pressies, food and family time so here’s a couple of images to keep things ticking over until I get back into the swing of regular posts in the new year.

Shooting with a flash really extends the amount of hours you can shoot, this one was taken before work, ISO 200, 10mm, f5.6, 1/250, with £7 flash in £7 dedicated plastic housing

There will definitely be a full post coming soon on my new on housing flash set-up, this one’s much simpler than the last rig, using the cheapest flash I could find on Amazon (£7) and a hard plastic case that it fits inside perfectly (also £7) and then some botching with some old GoPro bits I had lying around to mount it on the top of my housing.

This session I had the focus set very close, it was a mistake, but some of the shot’s, like this one, came out quite well, with the flash illuminating the foreground and quickly dying off, so thanks to this happy accident I will now set up my focus a bit closer than normal when using the flash set-up.

Christmas, it turns out, is a great time to have a hunt for some new waves, there’s usually swell (if you’re in the Northern hemisphere at least), and if you time it right you don’t have to deal with many people on the roads either, this tucked away spot was more fun than it looks, and I’m pretty sure no-one surfs here too, so I’ve found myself a nice left hander for working on my stand-up surfing, even when the wind’s howling.
